In early June it was announced that Maryland would be installing a new artificial surface football field at Byrd Stadium. Now the public has a chance to see what that field will look like.
Despite having an embarrassing season (2-10 overall, including a stomach stomping from the Temple Owls) on the football field last year, Maryland did very well in their merchandise sales. Their trendy retina-burning uniforms helped make them a hot topic of conversation in the college football world and earned them a spot for their highlights on ESPN.
All the positive results from the emphasis on aesthetics inspired Maryland to get the new field. Some thought they would
continue with the throw-up color scheme by having a yellow field. Wait a minute, I thought different colored turf was illegal now- WRONG, that’s actually just a myth.
As it turns out, the plan is to have a multicolored (but still green) field. They will continue to use the state flag theme that they’ve had so much success with in the endzones. Sidenote: How many other schools would consider using a state flag helmet?
Ole Miss perhaps? That would definitely get them some press coverage.
The top picture is supposed to be an accurate portrayal of what it will look like when the season officially begins…including the empty seats.
The new uniforms and field show Maryland’s dedication to increasing the popularity of their football program but they could probably achieve this better by just winning some games.
