Stanford running back Tyler Gaffney has reportedly given up on football, choosing instead to play Major League Baseball.
The Pittsburgh Pirates drafted Gaffney last month in the 24th round. Gaffney was on track to be a senior this fall. After running for 449 yards and seven touchdowns in his junior year he was expected to see a reasonable share of carries this season behind feature back Stepfan Taylor.
Gaffney played outfield for the Cardinal batting .301 with eight homers over the course of his career. He hit .245 with two home runs, 17 RBI and 48 runs scored in 54 games this past season.
Stanford ranked 18th overall in rushing last season.
