University of Wisconsin running back Montee Ball was the victim of an “unprovoked assault” early Wednesday morning. Madison Police report Ball was attacked by five men while walking down the 500 block of University Avenue in Madison, Wisconsin at 2:15 a.m. Ball was “knocked to the ground and kicked” in the body and head. Ball was taken to the hospital with head injuries and may have suffered a concussion. EDIT: Wisconsin confirms Ball did suffer a concussion and facial injuries. It is not clear at this time if Ball will be able to participate in the Badger’s first practice on Monday.
The Madison Police report is here. The attackers were described as five black men from 5’8″ to 6’3″ with small to heavy builds. They were wearing various colored polo shirts and ran away south on N. Frances Street toward the Kohl Center. EDIT: Ball was walking ahead of friends when he was attacked. Several people came to Ball’s defense and ran away the attackers. Ball is missing his cell phone and if police determine it was stolen this will also become a robbery.
“My concern right now is for Montee’s health and well-being,” Wisconsin coach Bret Bielema released in a statement. “Montee has been released from the hospital and is under the care and supervision of our sports medicine staff. We will continue to evaluate him as we approach the start of fall camp this weekend. I do expect Montee to make a full recovery.”
Last season Ball was a finalist for the Heisman trophy. He led the nation in rushing yards and TDs with 1923 yards and 33 rushing TDs. He tied the FBS season record for total TDs with 39 TDs.
