Tyrann Mathieu’s uncle Tyrone informed the media that his nephew Tyrann has been at Right Step, a drug and alcohol treatment center, in Houston since Monday. Tyrann will not be attending college this fall to in order to completely concentrate on rehabilitation. Tyrone Mathieu has characterized the decision as a family one.
Tyrann is being mentored daily by former NBA player John Lucas who overcame cocaine and alcohol addiction to become an NBA coach. John Lucas also attempted to help former LSU Tiger Jamarcus Russell overcome his struggles after his release from the Raiders. Frustrated by his lack of progress with Jamarcus, Mr. Lucas fired Jamarcus and asked Jamarcus to leave Houston in April of last year.
There are no comments on the situation directly from Tyrann Mathieu or from LSU, but here is what Miles told Mathieu on Tuesday when they spoke:
“I just wanted him to know that we’ll support him in whatever he wants to do and help him where we can,” Miles said. “At this point in time, he needs to do the things that make him happy and that makes sense for his future. If he does that, we’ll all be happy.”
