If you stayed up late enough on Saturday night you might have witnessed Oregon utterly obliterate the Arkansas State Red Wolves. Or you might have mistaken Oregon for the Jamaican national football team. Yes, I’m aware they don’t play football in Jamaica but if they did there’s no doubt their uniforms would look like the ones Oregon wore. There’s also no doubt that Oregon’s team could rival Jamaica’s in their passion for smoking weed.
Since Chip Kelly’s arrival the Duck’s offense has been called the Death Star and against Arkansas State that definitely looked to be a fitting moniker. The score was 50-3 halfway through the second quarter. After Gus Mulzahn, a forefather for explosive fast-paced offense, took over at Arkansas State many expected the season opener to be a barn burner. It definitely was a barn burner, but only one barn was burned.

At halftime the fire smoldered out as Chip Kelly sent in second and third stringers. The Ducks only scored once in the second half. Arkansas State eventually ended the game with 34 points but only 3 were in meaningful playing time. The final was 57-34.
Oregon’s freshman quarterback Marcus Mariota threw for 200 yards and three touchdowns with stud athlete De’Anthony Thomas catching two of those. Thomas also ran for another score.
The game solidified Oregon’s preseason top five ranking and showed that Chip Kelly has no problems running his offense with new personnel this season.
