2011 1st team All-SEC wide receiver Da’Rick Rogers had a solid week one to start the season with three catches for 75 yards and a touchdown. He wasn’t in the Georgia Dome with the Tennessee Volunteers on a nationally televised game. No, this time Rogers was in Cookeville, TN playing for the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles (FCS).
Rogers joined Tennessee Tech less than two weeks ago after being dismissed from the Tennessee program for repeatedly failed drug tests. Despite leading the conference in receptions last season, Rogers was supposedly being dismissed after the Vols lost to Kentucky last November. This was reportedly due to a fierce confrontation that Rogers had with the coaching staff in the locker room following the game.
This “double-secret probation” eventually ended and Rogers resumed participating in team activities. Then in the spring rumors again surfaced that Rogers was transferring to FCS program Georgia State (who the Vols will play this Saturday in the home opener). These rumors also eventually died down and Rogers appeared to be settling down until his eventual dismissal a couple weeks ago.
Like so many troubled talents before him Rogers appears to have squandered away his potential of playing for a premier Division I-FBS team. Looks like he’ll have to try and impress NFL scouts from Cookeville against teams like the Hampton Pirates. Good luck in the Ohio Valley Conference Da’Rick.
