Nebraska Coach’s Foundation Sued After Alleged Brain Injury

A woman is suing Football 101 (a foundation presented by the Bo Pelini Foundation and the Southeast Nebraska Cancer Center) and Nebraska’s offensive coordinator Tim Beck for alleged injuries she received during a football clinic in 2010.

The Associated Press reportsalleges “Beverly Morgan, 66, of Lincoln she fell and hit the back of her head during a drill in which a gauntlet of women struck her with blocking pads. The fall caused her cap and earrings to fly off, according to the lawsuit.

Beck oversaw the drill and, according to the lawsuit, encouraged the women in the lines to ‘hit her.’ After Morgan fell, Beck helped her to a chair on the sideline and left. Morgan alleged Beck was negligent because he failed to warn participants of the dangers of the drill and never saw to it that she received on-site medical treatment.”

Morgan claimed “her injuries left her unable to function normally, particularly in her work in the trucking industry. Initial symptoms included headaches, nausea and foot dragging and increased to slurred speech, memory loss and blurred vision, among other problems.

Two months after being injured, she had to go to the hospital for a procedure to alleviate bleeding on the brain, the lawsuit said. In February 2011 she required surgery for a shoulder injury related to her fall at the clinic.”

Ms. Morgan is seeking $92,500 in medical costs and punitive damages.

Football 101 was intended to be an annual event, however it has not be held since 2010. In 2010, the clinic hosted 95 women, teaching them football basics. Football 101 raised $100,000 for breast cancer research and treatment.
