The Ohio State Buckeyes have played 20 MAC opponents since 1992 and with the new playoff system looming the Buckeyes are hoping to improve their strength of schedule in hopes that it will improve their chances of grabbing a playoff spot.

“We’re changing our philosophy because we’re obviously going to move into a playoff structure that I don’t think all of us really understand yet, how the committee’s going to work,” Smith said earlier this week. “Many of us are assuming it’s going to work similar to the (NCAA tournament) basketball committee, so your non-conference schedule will come into consideration as they evaluate whether or not you’re going to be one of those final four teams.”

Ohio State has the Buffalo Bulls scheduled for 2013, the Kent State Golden Flashes in 2014, the Northern Illinois Huskies in 2015, and the Bowling Green Falcons in 2016. All of those games are to be played at Ohio State.

It’s a smart move and one that more schools will opt for soon.

Note: The big bad MAC beat 4 Bowl Championship schools last weekend.
