Mike Leach is known for his mouth. He’ll say just about anything about his players, coaches, or the media he usually has to deal with. It’s generally not a big deal, at least not until someone claims to have been locked in a closet when they are a grown man and could easily say no.
Leach has now decided to call out the seniors on his Washington State Cougars team saying some have been playing great and some have been playing poor. He went on to describe their play as zombie-like.
Some of them have had kind of this zombie-like, go through the motions, everything is like how it’s always been, that’s how it’ll always be. Some of them quite honestly have an empty-corpse quality. That’s not pleasant to say or pleasant to think about, but that’s a fact.
We just need focused people. Rather than have fragmented focus, right now we’re a team that if we face any adversity we get discouraged,” he said. “If you don’t embrace adversity, you’re never going to improve.
We’ve got to be a team that embraces adversity, and right now we’re a team that if it’s not easy, we want to flinch and flounder. We’ve got to change that. Part of it is changing the way we think and part of it is we haven’t really had the strength from our senior class we should get there. So we turn to our younger guys to develop them, and they’re a ways off.
Leach has had a tough road getting back into coaching after the whole James kid in the closet at Texas Tech thing, and he’s bringing new life to a program that has been down a long time. The Cougars are currently 2 – 4 on the season and 0 – 3 in Pac 12 play and are starting to get back into a rhythm after swapping quarterbacks back to Connor Halliday, who we claimed should be the starter from day one…twice.
It’ll be fun to see if Leach can turn the Cougars around into a Pac 12 competitor against the likes of Washington and Oregon and apparently Oregon State once again.
Here’s a fun video from Washington State fans about Mike Leach.
