Former Arkansas Razorbacks head coach Bobby PetrinoAccording to Bobby Petrino Sr., his son is interested in the Kentucky Wildcats job that will be open at the end of the season after Kentucky announced that Joker Phillips will not be returning for the 2013 season.

Petrino Sr. told the Louisville Courier-Journal on Wednesday that his son was definitely interested in staying in the SEC.

“I just know this, that he’s interested in Kentucky,” Bobby Petrino Sr. told the newspaper. “He wants to stay in the SEC. That was his life’s goal was to go to the SEC.”

This would be a slam-dunk hire for Kentucky. Petrino’s success at Arkansas proves that he can turn a program around and he was one of the best offensive-minded coaches in the SEC.

The question is whether or not Kentucky would bring him on with the baggage that he has after being fired from the Arkansas gig, and really why wouldn’t they jump at the chance to hire a name like Petrino? He is not likely to make the same mistake again, of course there’s no way to know that for sure.

Petrino lost over $21 million in potential earnings after the scandal at Arkansas was discovered and also lost his dream job.

“You know, he made mistakes,” Petrino Sr. told the paper, “but he couldn’t have gone through any punishment worse than losing his job. He’s missed coaching tremendously.”

If Kentucky waits too long, there may be another SEC coaching job open that would peak Petrino’s interest even more than coaching in Lexington. (Auburn)

Update: Yahoo’s Pat Forde says that Kentucky does NOT have Bobby Petrino on their list of potential candidates.

And it will not include Bobby Petrino, according to sources with knowledge of Kentucky’s initial list of candidates.

They should probably add him.

It is sad that Bob Sr said Bobby couldn’t be punished more than losing his job. What about his family? I have known the family for over forty years, and it doesn’t shock me he said that, it is just sad. I would think Auburn would be his first choice if given a choice.

Jim: But Gruden pretty much got that opening locked up, if he wants it.

With the job Bobby did this year at Arkansas he better be interested in another job because he’s in way over his head.
