Alabama Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban

Nick Saban, quite possibly one of the greatest coaches if not the greatest in college football history, is also quite possibly one of the biggest hypocrites.

Saban, whose team did not even play for a conference championship last season but made an appearance in the BCS title game for a second chance against the LSU Tigers, believes that a 1 loss Florida Gator team shouldn’t go to a BCS Bowl, likely the Sugar, over a 2 loss team that played in the SEC championship and lost.

“It’s not really a great scenario,” Saban said. “You play your way into the championship game, which means you’re the best team in your division. It doesn’t seem quite right. I don’t feel good about it for our football team or their football team (Georgia).”

Lets break this down a little bit and put some thought into Saban’s quote.

1. “It’s not really a great scenario.”

Saban is correct, it isn’t a great scenario and that’s why it’s changing soon, although he may end up not liking the new scenario when 3 or 4 SEC teams are represented and he has to play one of them in the first round.

2. “You play your way into the championship game, which means you’re the best team in your division.”

Saban is correct again, but this is where Nick believes that his statement only applies to a team other than his own. Even though Alabama won the re-match against the LSU Tigers, they didn’t play in their conference championship game and therefore, according to Saban’s own words weren’t the best team in their division and shouldn’t have played for a BCS title or even appeared in a BCS game. Should Alabama lose the SEC championship they would have 2 losses, and in the world of sport 1 loss is better than 2.

3. “It doesn’t seem quite right.”

Correct! Some would say it wasn’t right last season either when conference champions were passed over so that Saban’s Alabama team could get a second shot at a team that actually won their division and conference even if Alabama was the best team in the country.

4. “I don’t feel good about it for our football team or their football team (Georgia).”

Of course he doesn’t feel good about it, losing the SEC championship game would not benefit Saban at all. His team wouldn’t play in the Sugar Bowl and would probably have to make a trip to the Capital One Bowl where Saban is 1 – 1.

So to sum up, Nick Saban believes his team should go to the BCS championship game whether or not they win the SEC championship, and even if they lose the BCS championship game to Notre Dame, Alabama will likely claim their 47th, or is it 48th, football championship.

Sadly for Nick, the loser of the SEC championship will not, and does not deserve to go to a BCS bowl over a 1 loss team from that same conference, especially if that loss came to a top 10 team.

Good luck to the Gators in the Sugar Bowl.

Oh, and Roll Tide!

Oh, I see why we’re talking about Saban’s quote. Because of course Gator fans have their panties twisted into a wad about something and anything.
