Brian Kelly led the Irish to a 12-1 season and BCS championship game appearance where he was dominated by Alabama and Nick Saban.
Kelly interviewed with the Philadelphia Eagles earlier this week and then had a second interview.
Today Kelly announced he will be staying at Notre Dame and athletic director Jack Swarbrick said he and the interview wasn’t used as leverage for a new contract for Kelly.
“In every possible way I wasn’t being leveraged,” Swarbrick said. “I know people think there’s a direct connection between the two events, but in our case it felt more routine internally than it did externally.”
According to Swarbrick, the Eagles called soon after they fired Andy Reid and he asked them to wait to interview Kelly until after the BCS championship game.
“He absolutely burns to win a national title at Notre Dame,” Swarbrick said.
Kelly interviewing for the Eagles job should put some doubt in Notre Dame fans and recruits minds about his commitment to the school. There will be more openings next season in the NFL and Kelly’s name will most probably be mentioned for many of them, along with the other Kelly at Oregon.
