According to a story published by Deadspin‘s Tim Burke and Jack Dickey, Manti Te’o completely fabricated his girlfriend Lennay Kekua and her death.
His family never met Kekua and the images on her Twitter and Instagram accounts were stolen from a woman in California.
There is no record of Kekua’s death, her ever attending Stanford like Te’o said, or for that fact any other account of her person other than what a Twitter and Instagram account ever produced.
From the Deadspin story that you MUST read:
Nor is there any report of a severe auto accident involving a Lennay Kekua. Background checks turn up nothing. The Stanford registrar’s office has no record that a Lennay Kekua ever enrolled. There is no record of her birth in the news. Outside of a few Twitter and Instagram accounts, there’s no online evidence that Lennay Kekua ever existed.
Today, a Heisman trophy finalist has been accused of being a fraud. What he did on the field will now become irrelevant and this will take its place.
This is one of the craziest things I’ve ever read.
Your move NFL. Your move.
Johnny Manziel doesn’t look as bad for enjoying his fame now does he?
[UPDATE] Notre Dame has released a statement claiming that Te’o was the victim of a hoax
Notre Dame Statement: Manti Te’o
On Dec. 26, Notre Dame coaches were informed by Manti Te’o and his parents that Manti had been the victim of what appears to be a hoax in which someone using the fictitious name Lennay Kekua apparently ingratiated herself with Manti and then conspired with others to lead him to believe she had tragically died of leukemia. The University immediately initiated an investigation to assist Manti and his family in discovering the motive for and nature of this hoax. While the proper authorities will continue to investigate this troubling matter, this appears to be, at a minimum, a sad and very cruel deception to entertain its perpetrators.
