Friday morning Michigan Athletic Director Dave Brandon told reporters the University of Michigan created fake accounts on social networks, actively engaged current University of Michigan athletes, and later revealed the hoax. Michigan officials did this to teach the players a lesson.
This is likely a response to the highly publicized Notre Dame LB and Heisman Runner-up Manti Te’o, being “catfished” by Ronaiah Tuiasosopo. Catfishing refers to to process of creating a fake person in a social media environment and targeting a specific person using the fake person as lure with the intention of creating a relationship between the lured victim and the fake person. Allegedly, Te’o was tricked into believing in and having a long-distance relationship with a woman named Lennay Kekua. Lennay Kekua never existed and was created by Ronaiah Tuiasosopo.
The term “catfishing” derives from a 2010 movie, Catfish.
