Gus Malzahn is rumored to be the front runner for the North Carolina job after Butch Davis was fired earlier this season.

Here’s some notes about Malzahn for Tarheel fans.

Malzahn started at the University of Arkansas as Offensive Coordinator and Wide Receivers coach under Houston Nutt after an impressive high school coaching career. The hire was questioned by not only Arkansas fans, but college football media because Malzahn had no college experience at the time. In January of 2007, Malzahn was hired as the Head Coach at the University of Tulsa where he led The Golden Hurricane to 3rd in the nation in passing. This got the attention of a few of the bigger schools again, and in 2008 Malzahn was pulled away by Auburn’s newly hired Gene Chizik to be the Tiger’s Offensive Coordinator. The rest is history, because 2 years later a guy named Cam Newton came into town and Chizik and Malzahn, behind their SEC leading offense, Malzahn won the Broyles Award as the top assistant coach in the country.

Malzahn is best known for the Wildcat formation he installed at Arkansas.

Malzahn is widely respected as one of the nations top offensive coordinators and would bring something new and exciting to the Tarheels, the ACC, and their fans. I think the hire would be a good one.

Also this week, former Tarheel Head Coach Butch Davis took to Twitter to explain himself and the situation at UNC that cost him his job. (Davis video after the break.)
