Big 10 baseball tournament bench clearing brawl

The Big Ten Tournament Championship Game between Indiana and Purdue ended with a bench clearing brawl. In the top of the 9th, runners at 1st and 3rd, and the score tied 5 all, Purdue’s Eric Charles hits a chopper down the 3rd base line. Indiana ran down the third base runner Miller in a pickle before making an errant throw to Indiana shortstop Michael Basil. The errant throw allowed the Purdue baserunner to score and take a 6-5 lead. Indiana recovered the ball and threw it back to Basil at third as Purdue’s Charles “slid” into 3rd base. Charles’ slide was more of a chop block and Basil took issue with it.

Purdue’s Eric Charles and Indiana’s Casey Smith were both suspended for one game for their roles in the ensuing brawl. Purdue’s run would hold and secure a Boilermaker victory 6-5.
