People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, a.k.a. PETA has designed a billboard featuring an image of Notre Dame’s Manti Te’o with the tagline “Sometimes faking it is better.” The billboard then goes on to promote PETA’s recipes for faux-chicken wings in anticipation of Super Bowl Sunday.
The advertisement on PETA’s official blog states,
Manti Te’o may have been buffaloed by a fake girlfriend, but sometimes “fake” is actually better. That’s why PETA created this billboard urging football fans to avoid unnecessary roughness to chickens on Super Bowl Sunday by intentionally grounding real chicken wings and opting for play-action fake fowl instead:
Those animals in PETA’s “Glass Walls” video? Unlike Manti’s make-believe girlfriend, their deaths are real. Birds slaughtered for their wings and other body parts are often dropped into tanks of scalding-hot water while they are still conscious and aren’t covered by even the meager protections of the Humane Slaughter Act.
The price of chicken wings is currently skyrocketing because of higher feed costs caused by this summer’s drought, which makes now the perfect time to try vegan wings, such as Gardein Classic Style Buffalo Wings, a favorite of vegetarian and former Miami Dolphins running back Ricky Williams.
This Super Bowl Sunday, opt for healthy and humane faux wings (find recipes at PETA’s Living page). That way, nobody gets hurt.
In general, PETA is not known for their sense of humor however this advertisement is worthy of The Onion. The biting satire of the line, “Unlike Manti’s make-believe girlfriend, their deaths are real” in particular is almost enough to get me to try a Gardein Classic Style Buffalo Wing. Maybe. Eventually.. Probably not…
Deadspin broke the story of Manti Te’o’s phantom girlfriend last week. The article captured national attention but interest has started to wain to due media oversaturation and it ultimately being a story about a kid who lied about and/or was tricked into having a relationship with a non-existent girl.
EDIT: According to Matt Hinton of CBSSports.com, PETA is hoping to get this design approved and billboards erected in New Orleans before this Sunday’s Super Bowl. Hinton quotes PETA Media Officer Wendy Wegner as saying, “PETA’s counsel has reviewed the use of Te’o’s image and the Notre Dame logo in this context, and PETA thinks that the use is appropriate.”
